BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE PROJECT

SECURE FUNDING

As well as having the endorsement of the project by various stakeholders, the project must be financially sustainable. Adequate funding needs to be secured for every aspect of the planned project. The costs that must be covered include:

  • Working hours of the team directly involved in carrying out the project
  • Training activities undertaken by the team
  • Production of communication materials
  • Supporting outreach activities like engagement meetings and surveys
  • Implementing findings such as road upgrades
  • Mass media campaigns

POTENTIAL FUNDING SOURCES TO SECURE ROAD UPGRADES

No life is saved until a road is upgraded. A Star Rating for Schools assessment is an effective method of raising awareness of road safety and empowering the community to push for safer roads. However, it is also important to seek partnerships and funding opportunities with local agencies to implement road infrastructure improvements and potentially expand the project to the municipal and national level. Opportunities to fund road upgrades around assessed schools include:

  • Partnership with the local road authority and school community
  • Partnership with private organisations with the potential to sponsor road upgrades
  • Combining upgrades with ongoing safety projects in conjunction with road authorities
  • Joint efforts with different departments (health, education, infrastructure etc.) and organisations
  • Proposal to grants from international organisations. For details on the specific submissions, please refer directly to the channels of the specific organisation.
